Charlotte Square

Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, Scotland

Charlotte Square is situated at the Western end of Edinburgh's New Town. The construction of the buildings here - in 1820 - brought with it the completion of James Craig's city expansion plan, which had received the blessing of King George III in 1767. While Craig was responsible for the street plan, the architecture of Charlotte Square reflects the considerable talents of the renowned Scottish architect Robert Adam. The facade seen above forms part of the West side of the square, and sits contiguous to West Register House (home of the National Records of Scotland). On the perpendicular, North side of Charlotte Square - at number 6 - is Bute House, official residence of the First Minister of Scotland.
